New Additions

New additions. I am running out of space so i decided to plant them together. To the left is Paph. charlesworthii. The bigger plant is Paph. javanicum. Both from my friend Gordon who is now based near Larkin in Johore.

What happened was i received a call from Gordon which came as a total surprise because i haven't heard from him since i shifted to my new place. He asked me if i could still remember the Dendrobium anosmums that i gave him many years back. He is having problems pollinating them so he reckon he has a better chance using pollen from another cane.

I happen to have a few plants in flower and in fact both normal and alba forms are in flower so we met in Ang Mo Kio S11 foodcourt. He also told me he just got a few Paph.javanicums and charlesworthii so i decided to buy some from him.

I bought a few Paph. charlesworthii from CTC market last year. They are big plants now but not flowering yet so what the heck, a few more won't hurt.

So my good angmoh friend Gordon came down from Larkin in Johore and we exchanged the goods over some Iced Tea and Iced Coffee. He also brought me a gift ; its a Dendrobium. A few days after i hung it up, i spotted a flower bud, then 2 more, then it flowered, which got me searching for its name; finally found it: Dendrobium cretaceum.

Phal. cornu-cervi and bellina

Another cornu-cervi. This plant came from CTC market but when i bought it the color was that of the normal form. The flower was mainly greenish yellow with only a few patches of brown. The more i grow it, the more it begins to resemble the other cornu-cervi (See below). Strange.

This is another Phal.bellina but with a very pleasant violet blush. This plant was from Mr. Lim Song's nursery in Penang.

Paph. exul spiking again

The following 2 pictures shows paph. exul forming 2 spikes. This plant is very free flowering. I am a bit reluctant to repot it although it has grown into a big clump.

Dendrobium anosmum is one of the orchids that grow very well in our weather. Mine usually flowers near chinese new year.

Dendrobium anosmum alba. They smell just like the purple form.
This picture was taken while some of the buds are unopen.

This picture shows all the flowers open. Anosmum's smell seems to attract lots of fruit flies which lands on the flowers and starts licking the surface. They are so engrossed that it is very easy to catch them using a plastic bag.

Fruit flies caught using a plastic bag. I can easily catch more than 10 of them every day when anosmums are in flower.

The eagle has landed..... commencing licking operation...
